Serpentine is a stone of glow rather than pattern. This little bulldog is carved from translucent chartreuse stone — bright lemon-yellow with a green undertone — that lights up where the carving is thin, with soft internal clouds no two pieces share — natural, mineral, nothing uniform about it. What variation exists is in the depth and glow of its yellow-green — nature's fingerprints, not flaws.
Every bulldog is carved entirely by hand from a single piece of serpentine, then polished to a mirror finish. The upright bat ears, the round indented eyes, the short blunt muzzle and the sturdy seated pose are all cut with the same patient hand — nothing moulded, nothing cast. It measures 1.4 × 1.2 × 2.0 inches and weighs 50–60 g, small enough to rest on a fingertip, substantial enough to feel like a real companion.
Serpentine takes its name from the Latin serpens — serpent — after the snake-like play of light across its surface, and medieval Europe once carried it as a charm against snakebite. Through its serpent imagery it has long been linked with renewal and transformation. Today it is associated with growth and gentle renewal.
