Green Drawn from the Earth’s Own Palette
Nine Dragon Jade — also known as Dragon Stone or Chinese painting stone — is a naturally patterned jasper or rhyolite found primarily in China, prized for its landscape-like surface markings. The stone forms when silica-rich volcanic material consolidates with varying mineral content across the same mass: iron oxides produce the red and brown tones, chlorite and epidote produce the greens, and the boundaries between them form the irregular, pictorial patterns that give the material its name. No pigment is added; the markings are entirely the product of mineralogy.
Each skull is hand-carved from a single block of natural Nine Dragon Jade. The orientation of the carving determines which part of the stone’s internal pattern is revealed across the face and skull — a block that appears predominantly green may open to reveal deep brown veining through the orbital area, or a creamy matrix beneath the jaw. Because the colour distribution follows the stone’s own geology rather than any human plan, the finished piece carries a pattern that existed in the rock before the carver’s first cut.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is Nine Dragon Jade — is it a true jade?
Nine Dragon Jade is not jade in the strict mineralogical sense. True jade refers specifically to nephrite or jadeite. Nine Dragon Jade is a patterned jasper or rhyolite — a volcanic rock with a fine-grained silica matrix — distinguished by its naturally occurring landscape-like colour patterns. The name is a trade name referencing its origin and visual character, not a mineralogical classification. All our product listings describe the material accurately so you know what you are purchasing.
What is Nine Dragon Jade associated with?
Within the crystal and spiritual community, stones with green and earth tones are often linked to grounding, growth, and connection to natural cycles. Nine Dragon Jade in particular is sometimes described as carrying the quality of the landscape itself — a sense of deep time and natural balance. These associations reflect beliefs held within that community and are not medically verified claims — Nine Dragon Jade is a decorative and collectible object, and any meaning it carries is personal.
The above reflects beliefs within the crystal healing community and is not intended as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.
How do I care for a Nine Dragon Jade skull?
Nine Dragon Jade has a hardness of approximately 6–7 on the Mohs scale, making it reasonably durable for display purposes. Wipe with a soft dry cloth; avoid prolonged water exposure or chemical cleaners. The stone is generally stable in normal indoor conditions and is not particularly light-sensitive. Store individually to prevent the detailed carving from chipping against other hard objects.
