Rose Quartz is a stone of colour rather than pattern. This little bulldog shifts between pale blush and warm candlelight pink depending on the light, with a soft translucency that lets daylight glow right through the ears. Each bulldog is carved entirely by hand from a single piece of rose quartz, then polished to a mirror finish. The upright bat ears, the round indented eyes, the short blunt muzzle and the sturdy seated pose are all cut with the same patient hand — nothing moulded, nothing cast. It measures 1.4 × 1.2 × 2.0 inches and weighs 50–60 g, small enough to rest on a fingertip, substantial enough to feel like a real companion.
In ancient Rome, rose quartz was carried as a token between lovers — the stone of Venus, goddess of love and beauty — and Egyptian artefacts suggest it was believed to guard against ageing.
